Increasing longevity and life satisfaction: is there a catch to living longer?

Abstract Human longevity is rising rapidly all over the world, but are longer lives more satisfied lives? This study suggests that answer might be no. Despite a substantial increase in months of satisfying life, people’s overall life satisfaction declined between 1985 and 2011 West Germany due to losses old age. When compared 1985, 2011, elderly Germans were, on average, much less throughout their last five years life. Moreover, they spent larger proportion remaining lifetime states dissatisfaction, average. Two important mechanisms contributed this decline were health social isolation. Using broad variety sensitivity tests, I show these results robust large set alternative explanations.
